Frequently Asked Questions
MESA Plastic Support Pedestals

What are support pedestals?<!--qu-->

Support pedestals are a system that enable the laying of porcelain paving or decking substructures without the need for grout, adhesive or cement. Using support pedestals makes for a quick and easy installation, while still proving a robust substructure for your paving or decking.

Support pedestals are nearly always used on flat roofs, balconies, and terraces, and they are increasingly used in gardens.

Please note for higher buildings MESA have a steel pedestal range which are non-combustible and often more appropriate.<!--split-->

What are MESA plastic support pedestals made of?<!--qu-->

MESA plastic support pedestals are made from 90% recycled polypropylene and polyethylene, and 10% talc, UV stabilisers and black masterbatch. They are the most intelligent, robust and sustainable paving supports on the market. With an easy twist of the top part of the pedestal, the height can be adjusted to allow for a simple and quick installation. MESA plastic support pedestals are also a low maintenance solution making them the perfect choice for any commercial area or residential installation.<!--split-->

What size do MESA plastic support pedestals come in?<!--qu-->

MESA plastic support pedestals come in an adjustable height range of 10-740mm with a head diameter of 140mm, and a base diameter of 200mm. These diameters have been engineered to allow for maximum support while still fitting seamlessly under your paving or decking.<!--split-->

What are the different parts of MESA plastic support pedestals?<!--qu-->

The bottom of the MESA plastic support pedestal is known as the base unit. This has a diameter of 200mm for maximum support. The middle part has the extending ring and coupler. This part is only supplied with pedestals exceeding 175mm height. The top part of the pedestal comes with a collar fix. This locks the height adjustments and ensures it does not lower due to vibrations or shock movement.

For the smaller heights of MESA pedestals, this is slightly different. The 10-44mm joist cradles, for example, are made of a cylindrical piece, which come packaged together. The 11-16mm pedestals are made from two very low cylindrical pieces, which also come packaged together.<!--split-->

How do I know how many pedestals I will need?<!--qu-->

In order to work out how much material you would require, we first ask you to take measurements of your proposed area. You can then put these measurements into our easy to use online calculators, which will automatically work out how many pedestals you will require. Alternatively, you can get in touch or call a member of our team on +44 020 3666 1134 to help work out your project quantities.

How do I use MESA plastic support pedestals?<!--qu-->

Ensure the foundation area where you will lay your decking or paving is free of all debris, lay out the pedestals along the edge. Adjust the height by turning the pedestal head and lock into place by twisting the collar fix. We recommend using a plumb to check the level of the pedestals. Please note, we recommend leaving a slope of 1:60, depending on the situation, to prevent water from settling. When laying the pedestals, ensure your joists or paving slabs are fully supported. To find out the support span, please check our installation guide. The installation of MESA plastic support pedestals is also highly dependent on whether you’ll be using them to support decking or paving. We thus recommend reading the appropriate section of the installation guide prior to installing your pedestals.
