Frequently Asked Questions
Plastic Lumber

What is plastic lumber?

Plastic lumber is a form of lumber that is made of 100% plastic. The collection we provide, Manticore Plastic Lumber, is formed from 100% recycled plastics, collected from all over the UK. The production process makes use of mixed plastics from post-consumer waste, which is currently unusable by conventional recycling methods, meaning an otherwise contaminated surplus plastic packaging can be diverted from landfill into second-life products.

What is plastic lumber used for?

Plastic lumber is most commonly used to support outdoor decking. Manticore lumber does, however, come in different moulds suitable for fencing and decking, plastic sheets, hoarding boards, and lawn edgings. We also supply recycled plastic benches and street furniture.

What are the benefits of plastic lumber?

Plastic lumber is made from one of the longest lasting materials – plastic – meaning that it will not rot or degrade with age. This makes it extremely low maintenance, as it does not require any maintenance besides an occasional wipe. Furthermore, plastic lumber will not crack and is resistant to insect attacks. It is also perfect for outdoor use as it is waterproof. At EnviroBuild, we care about the environment so we also ensured Manticore lumber is inert and does not leach any harmful chemicals into the environment.

What size does Manticore lumber come in?

Manticore lumber sections come in 20x100mm, 30x100mm, 40x40mm, 50x50mm, 40x100mm, 50x100mm, 50x150mm, and 75x125mm.

We also provide a range of plastic round lumber posts, decking, benches, street furniture and edgings. Browse them all here.

Do you do made-to-order?

Yes, we do. Manticore plastic lumber usually comes in black, but upon request is available in brown. We can also provide you with different lengths, widths and depths. Please note that if you have requested a made to order, lead times will be longer than usual as these will need to be manufactured separately and are not stored in our warehouse.

How much warranty do you offer on your plastic lumber?

Manticore plastic lumber comes with a 10-year limited international warranty.

You can find the full warranty here.

Is plastic lumber slip resistant?

Manticore plastic lumber has been rated 0.58 on the coefficient of friction (BS 7976-2) when dry and 0.46 when wet. While this makes it slip-resistant, we recommend using the Manticore plastic decking range or Hyperion decking if you are looking for a plastic lumber to walk on.

It is the customers responsibility to determine the suitability of Manticore lumber for their private or commercial installation. EnviroBuild can provide test reports including a report for slip resistance to help. Always install boards at right angles to the main direction of travel to make best use of Manticore lumber’s slip resistant properties. For full technical specifications, click here.

How do I know how much lumber I will need?

In order to work out how much material you would require, we first ask you to take measurements of your proposed area. You can then put these measurements into our easy to use online calculators, which will automatically work out how much lumber you will require. Our calculators can either calculate how much Manticore plastic lumber you will need for decking substructures or for fencing. Alternatively, you can call a member of our team on +44 (0) 208 088 4888 to help work out your project quantities.

How do I cut plastic lumber?

Standard woodworking tools can be used when working with Manticore lumber. If you are unsure on how to use any tool, please consult the manufacturer’s user manual. Please note that even though every effort has been made to make Manticore lumber 100% plastic, some metal pieces are not always extracted in the recycling process and remain in the mix. That’s why we recommend using a tungsten carbide tipped saw blade. For full installation guides, click here.

Is plastic lumber easy to maintain?

Yes, it is. Manticore lumber is made from 100% recycled plastic giving it many of the properties plastic has. It is an extremely durable product that will not rot or degrade for years to come and will not crack or dry. As a result, you will not have to paint or treat it with any chemicals and will only need an occasional wipe. It is also perfect for outdoor use as it is waterproof and resistant against insect attacks such as termites.

Environmental Pledge

Is Manticore plastic lumber environmentally friendly?

Yes, it is. Manticore plastic lumber profiles and products are made using 100% recycled mixed plastics from post-consumer waste that is currently unusable by conventional recycling methods. To go further when the material is sorted and purified, any waste metal is collected and sent to be reused as well.

As the plastic wood is a non-absorbent material, this means that it will last far beyond standard timber products, helping to reduce the wasteful short use and replace cycle. Additionally, as the lumber never requires treating, no harmful chemicals or labour are required every year. Where possible the products have also been designed to enable them to be recycled back into usable material after their usable life.

How else is EnviroBuild sustainable?

We ensure that the materials we supply are certified with; a high recycled content & recyclability level, long working life, plus where possible, the manufacturing process incorporates environmentally beneficial best practices. To go a step further, we donate 10% of our profits to sustainable causes to help become a carbon negative business. Read more about our environmental pledge here.
